The long lasting effects of matcha can be attributed to L-theanine. L-theanine as well as the polyphenols — natural compounds found in plants — in tea slows the release of caffeine into the body. Therefore, matcha will create alertness while still keeping your brain relaxed, and the feeling of alertness will last much longer than that from a cup of coffee. Matcha can give you 4-6 hours (or more) or mellow, sustained energy.

Whereas coffee can make some people jittery, matcha is much less likely to do this. To picture this, think about eating an apple vs. eating a chocolate bar. They both have sugar, but the fiber in the apple slows down the ingestion of the sugar into your bloodstream, giving you a more steady energy source. A chocolate bar will give you a quick boost of energy, and then a crash from the sugar.

Similarly, the L-theanine in matcha gives you a steady boost of caffeine, helps calm the mind and may improve memory and concentration, while coffee will give you a quick boost, but then your energy levels will crash.

Because matcha releases caffeine over time, it is better suited to provide focus and concentration, and matcha does not cause those caffeine jitters.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Matcha?

Matcha is finely ground green tea that is usually ground from tencha, a shade-grown green tea. This tea is carefully harvested and has all of its stems and veins removed before the leaves are ground into matcha.

What does Matcha taste like?

Matcha has a vegetal, earthy taste but it is also quite creamy and naturally sweet. Similarly, it has a sweet leafy smell.

Where does Matcha originate?

Matcha first originated in China during the Tang Dynasty. Later, it became popular in Japan as an integral part of Zen Buddhism and traditional Japanese tea ceremonies. Matcha is considered to be a Japanese tea, but it is now growing appreciation worldwide.

How is Matcha so green?

Matcha leaves (Camellia sinensis) are grown in the shade. By growing these leaves in the shade, the plant produces more chlorophyll as an adaptation. Chlorophyll is the chemical compound plants use to absorb the sun’s energy and it is also distinctively green. The more chlorophyll that is produced, the greener the leaves and the greener the matcha. Farmers aim to produce bright green matcha by slowly decreasing the amount of sunlight available to the plant for as long as two months. We do not add any additional colors.

How long does Matcha last?

It is recommended that matcha is used 1-2 months after opening. Otherwise seal the bag tight and store in a cool, dry and dark place. Keeping matcha for long periods of time can cause the matcha to oxidize and turn brown, making it unpleasant and slightly sour. Oxidation also causes matcha to lose much of its nutritional value and antioxidant properties. Think about how a banana browns if you don’t eat it in time! It is the same reaction.

How do you store Matcha?

In order to avoid your matcha from going stale or dull, it is best to keep your matcha in a cool dry place. This way, less moisture is able to get in and possibly oxidize your matcha. Keeping matcha in the fridge may also increase its shelf life. Our Matcha packaging is airtight and dark to prevent oxidation and make sure your matcha lasts longer and stays fresh.

Can I drink too much Matcha?

Unlike coffee that can cause digestive problems or caffeine crashes, matcha is more forgiving if you consume more. We recommend starting with 1-2 cups a day and go from there.

Can I make Matcha without a whisk?

Absolutely. Simply add 1 tablespoon of warm water to the powder in the bottom of your cup. Mix until you make a smooth paste, then fill your cup with more warm water. However, we do recommend trying the whisk or Pearl Big Sip. They are uniquely made for creating a frothy matcha tea which has an airy creamy texture and tastes deliciously pleasant.

Can I only drink Matcha in the morning?

It is recommended that you drink matcha in the morning, but it might also be great for helping you unwind from a long day. It can help you relax your mind and give you some energy to get in a work out or hang out with the family.

How is Matcha different from other teas?

Matcha is very lightly processed to retain all its nutrients. Additionally, since the whole leaf is consumed in matcha, as opposed to only the steeped infusion, the nutritional benefits of matcha are even higher than that of other teas!

How do you prepare Matcha?

Half of a teaspoon of matcha should be combined with one cup of warm water in a bowl. Then the matcha should be whisked using a matcha whisk or Pearl Big Sip for 15-20 seconds until it is a bit frothy and bubbles have formed on the surface. We recommend whisking in an “M” shape. The matcha is now ready to serve and can be poured over ice for a cold version.

Alternatively, matcha can easily be prepared using the Pearl Big Sip. With a built-in agitator (that acts like a whisk), matcha can be made warm or cold. Add 1 cup of warm or cold water and ½ teaspoon of matcha to The Big Sip and shake. Your matcha is ready to serve. The Big Sip can also be used to add matcha to your smoothies, juices, milk, coconut water, or anything you desire.

I’m concerned about the environment. Is your Matcha sustainable?

Our matcha is ethically sourced as we are a part of the Ethical Tea Partnership. We strive to improve sustainability of tea and the environment, improve the lives of tea workers and tea farmers, and improve environmental management systems to protect soil, water ecosystems, and wildlife.
